The Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station (Cornell AES) is dedicated to sustainable "science for life," in its two core, separate but related, functions -- the operation of world-class research facilities throughout the state and the generation and application of research-based knowledge through the administration of federal formula grants.

The 68-acre facility is dedicated to serve the research and extension needs for the horticulture industry of Long Island. The facility features agricultural fields and research plots, state-of-the-art greenhouses, a nursery and container production area, and a plant tissue culture facility in support of research projects ranging from grape and vegetable production, to ornamentals and floriculture. LIHREC is located close to the tip of Long Island, in the heart of Suffolk County. Unique growing conditions on Long Island provide exceptional opportunities for this region.

What You Will Do

As the Field Assistant III, you will provide direct support for research, teaching and extension in accordance with the Land Grant Mission.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide technical and general labor support for field research trials in a broad range of vegetable crops, grapes, ornamentals, cut flowers, and agronomic crops.
  • Assist with field tillage preparation, fertilizing, planting, harvesting, mowing, stone picking and data collection. Adhere to and participate in personal safety training, policies, and procedures.
  • Responsible for equipment assembly, operation, safety, and modification to meet changing research objectives.
  • Additional tasks include herbicide, pesticide, and irrigation treatments, reporting and recording, irrigation system setup and operation, daily performance recording, supply and parts procurement, and facility maintenance.
  • Assist programs with harvesting and data collection at LIHREC and occasionally travel to locations within NYS. Required to support and interact with Faculty, Staff and Graduate students in multiple Departments conducting research trials at numerous locations.
  • Oversee daily monitoring and reporting of weather systems information.
  • Keep detailed records and assist in overall maintenance and support functions for field acreage, greenhouse facilities, growth chambers and facilities.

Adapt the CUAES culture of sustainability as it pertains to reducing resource inputs; protecting the environment and natural resources, facility and equipment use, and alternative crop production practices.

What We Need from You

You will be most successful in this role if you have the a bility to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • Associates degree and up to 2 years of practical farming experience or equivalent combination.
  • Ability to acquire a New York State Certified Pesticide Applicators License within two years of start date.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
  • Experience with computers; must possess basic skills in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Internet navigation.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds.
  • Proficient understanding and capability of mechanics, electricity, carpentry, and plumbing.
  • Ability to weld or a willingness to learn how to weld.
  • Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify weed, disease, and insect pests of agronomic crops.
  • Work in all kinds of unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Must be safety oriented; know, understand, adhere, and train others to conform to all safety requirements and regulations.
  • Must be able to obtain OSHA forklift and lift operator certifications within 6 months.

Proven ability to communicate clearly with faculty, unit supervisor, staff, students, vendors, and other research and extension personnel in a professional and respectful manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3+ years of experience in farming operations is desirable.
  • Experience with precision agriculture - autosteer, data collection systems on machinery preferred.

Pay range is $23.73 - $24.92 per hour (supersedes posting range below)
