The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Government Underwriter to join our team! In this role, you will review and evaluate mortgage loan documents to determine if the borrower, property, and transaction meet our guidelines. With over $20 billion in funded mortgage loans, your decision-making will be crucial in shaping our clients' financial futures. This position requires a balance of independent work and teamwork, critical thinking skills, and excellent written and verbal communication abilities. You will play a vital role in maintaining exceptional customer service, aligned with our company culture.
As a Government Underwriter, you will work with numbers and calculations, so strong auditing and analytical skills, along with a solid understanding of math, are essential. You will also need strong decision-making skills, as you will be responsible for evaluating and approving or denying loan applications.
This is a Full-Time/Remote opportunity with competitive pay ranging from $85,000 to $90,000 annually.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review credit documents in accordance with FHA and VA guidelines.
- Evaluate borrowers' income and assets per established guidelines.
- Assess subject property title and appraisal to ensure compliance.
- Make independent loan decisions (Approve or Decline).
- Sign off on conditions as necessary.
- Verify the consistency of information throughout the loan file.
- Utilize FHA Connection, FHA EAD, VA VIP/WebLGY, and GUS for verification and correction of required forms.
- Complete assigned files within established turn times.
- Maintain clear communication and provide excellent customer service throughout the loan process.
- Perform other duties as assigned; overtime may be required based on business needs.
Requirements:
- A minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a DE and SAR Underwriter.
- At least 2 years of recent expertise in FHA and VA lending.
- Thorough understanding of current FHA and VA guidelines.
- Familiarity with federal and state regulations in the mortgage banking sector (including TRID, ECOA, Fair Lending, etc.) is essential.
- Proficient knowledge of DU/LP/TOTAL Scorecards is required.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with brokers.
- Preference for candidates with 6 months or more experience in USDA/RD, though it's not mandatory.
